What do business customers use 3D printing for?
3D printing for business is increasingly about more than prototypes. At Maker Factory we receive requests daily for production-relevant parts — components that go into a machine, handle a product, or keep a production line running. What they have in common is that they need to function, not just look like something.
The most common applications we see from business customers:
- Jigs and fixtures — assembly aids and positioning tools for repeated assembly, welding or inspection. Printed in PETG-CF or PA6-CF for stiffness and accuracy.
- Spare parts and replacement parts — parts for machines that are no longer manufactured, or where the original part has a 6-8 week lead time. We can print from a drawing or from a damaged original part that gets scanned.
- Protective and packaging inserts — custom inserts for transport and protection of components. Typically in TPU for shock absorption.
- Functional prototypes for validation — not trade show prototypes, but engineering validations. Printed in the final production material to test fit and function.
- Small-batch production — runs from 5 to 500 pieces of parts that are too complex or too small to justify tooling.
When is 3D printing the right choice for your business?
3D printing isn't the universal answer to every production need — but there are clear situations where it consistently beats the alternatives on a combination of price, speed and flexibility. Here are the three most important scenarios:
When you can't wait for traditional production
CNC machining typically has a 2-4 week lead time. Injection molding requires tooling that takes months to produce. If your production line is at a standstill because one plastic part has broken — and the supplier says 3 weeks — 3D printing is the answer. In most cases we can deliver a functional replacement part within 1-3 business days of receiving the STL file or drawing.
The part doesn't need to be perfect the first time. Send us the best description you have — a photo, the original part, or a hand-drawn sketch — and we'll find a solution.
When the batch size doesn't justify tooling
Injection molding becomes competitive from around 10,000 pieces and up. Below that, the tooling cost per part is disproportionately high. 3D printing has no tooling cost — the price is purely material and machine time. That makes the technology ideal for runs of 1-500 pieces, and for parts that change design on an ongoing basis without losing a tooling investment.
Many of our business customers use us for "bridge production" — they print the first 200 pieces with us while the injection molding tool is being manufactured. That way they don't lose their market window.
When the geometry is too complex for machining
Internal channels, undercuts, organic shapes and complicated assembly geometries are difficult or impossible to mill from a block — they require either expensive 5-axis operations or splitting into several parts that are later joined. 3D printing produces the geometry directly, regardless of complexity, at the same price as a simple box. That opens up design optimization that wouldn't have been possible — or cost-effective — with subtractive manufacturing.
A machine builder needed 40 mounting brackets for a new production line. The CNC supplier quoted 4 weeks and DKK 18,000. We printed the parts in PA6-CF in 5 business days for a quarter of the price. The parts are still in the machine 14 months later with no signs of wear.
- You need a part fast and can't wait for traditional lead times.
- The batch size is under 500 pieces and tooling isn't cost-effective.
- The geometry is too complex for machining or requires expensive special operations.
- You want to validate a design in the production material before investing in tooling.
- You have an ongoing need for custom parts that change from order to order.
Materials for business use
Choosing the right material is the most important decision in a 3D printing project. Here are the materials we recommend for the most common business applications:
| Material | Heat resistance | Tensile strength | Typical business application |
|---|---|---|---|
| PA6-CF | ~150-180 °C | ~80-100 MPa | Jigs, fixtures, brackets, machine parts |
| PETG-CF | ~80-90 °C | ~55-70 MPa | Assembly aids, inserts, protective parts |
| ASA | ~90-100 °C | ~40-50 MPa | Outdoor use, UV-exposed parts |
| TPU 95A | ~80 °C | ~30-45 MPa | Seals, shock absorbers, flexible grips |
| PC (Polycarbonate) | ~110-130 °C | ~50-65 MPa | High thermal load, transparent applications |
| SLA Tough Resin | ~50-65 °C | ~38-55 MPa | High detail, precision parts, gears |
Not sure about material choice? We provide free advice as part of your request. Just describe your application — temperature requirements, mechanical load, chemical exposure and surface requirements — and we'll recommend the right material.
Ordering process for business customers
We've designed our process to minimize administrative friction for business customers:
- Send a request — upload STL file(s) via our quote request form, or send the file directly to our email with your specifications (material, quantity, desired finish).
- Quote within 24 hours — we get back to you with price, lead time and any design recommendations for printability. No commitment at the request stage.
- Approve and production starts — once you accept the quote, we put your order into production the same day (for orders received before 12:00).
- Delivery with tracking — we pack parts securely and ship with PostNord Business with tracking. Delivery typically 1-5 business days from order confirmation.
For regular business customers with ongoing orders, we offer framework credit agreements and priority production. Contact us to hear more.
Industries we work with
Maker Factory delivers 3D printing to business customers across a broad range of industries. See more about industry-specific solutions on our pages for industry and manufacturing, electronics and technology, and machine building and automation.
- Machine builders and automation companies — jigs, fixtures, mounting brackets, replacement parts.

Price and lead time
The price of 3D printing for business depends on material type, the part's volume and print time, the batch quantity, and any post-processing. We always give a fixed price in the quote — no surprises on invoicing.
- Standard lead time: 2-5 business days from order confirmation.
- Express: 24-hour delivery possible on select materials when ordered before 10:00 — contact us directly.
- Volume discount: From 10+ identical parts, a discount on machine time is applied automatically.
- Free design review: All requests include a brief printability assessment at no extra charge.

Can you handle ongoing orders at fixed intervals?
Yes. We work with a number of business customers on subscription-based production agreements, where they receive a fixed quantity of parts weekly or monthly. That gives predictable lead times and lets us plan production on our end well in advance. Contact us to hear about framework credit agreements.
What if I don't have an STL file — only a drawing or a damaged original part?
We can work from 2D drawings (DXF, PDF, hand sketches), photos of existing parts, or physical parts sent to us for scanning and modeling. Our 3D design service can turn your description or drawing into a printable STL file. Just mention in your request that you need design help, and we'll assess the scope.
What is your minimum order?
We have no formal minimum order. We're happy to print a single part. For very small individual parts there may be a minimum fee of DKK 150-200 to cover machine setup — this will always be stated clearly in the quote.
Can you deliver with an invoice and payment terms?
Yes. New business customers typically pay on order confirmation or on delivery. Regular customers can apply for a credit account with 14 or 30 day payment terms. Invoices are issued with a VAT/CVR number and are ready for bookkeeping.
What about NDAs and confidentiality?
We treat all customer files and projects as confidential by default. For projects that require a formal NDA, we can sign your company's standard agreement — contact us before sending files so we can get the paperwork in place.
Can you print in our company colors?
Filament is available in many standard colors, but color accuracy varies. For precise color matching to RAL or Pantone codes, we recommend our painting and airbrush service as an add-on to the print. We print in the nearest color and then paint it to the exact color code.
Do you deliver across Denmark?
Yes. We're based in Denmark and ship with PostNord nationwide — typically 1-2 days transit time after dispatch. We also ship to Sweden, Norway and Germany on request.
Is your business located in the Aarhus area or Jutland? We deliver across the whole region — see 3D printing delivery to Aarhus and Jutland.
